KidzVideo

Case Study Overview

As the culmination of my participation in Binar Academy bootcamp last year, this "KidzVideo" project stands as a testament to our collaborative efforts to address a critical challenge in the digital age. In partnership with a product manager and UI/UX designers, our goal was to create a secure, educational, and user-friendly video platform for children, acknowledging the concerns of working parents. Our design thinking approach guided us through ideation, prototyping, and iteration phases, resulting in intuitive parental controls and content curation features.

Problem Statement

According to PEW Research Center, 80% of parents with children age 11 or younger say their child watches YouTube videos. About half of them say their child watches videos on YouTube on a daily basis. We found that this can cause health problems, if the children are left unsupervised when they are watching videos, not to mention the pervasive amount of videos with lack of educational value. The problems could get worse if the parents are working full-time and can not always pay attention to what their children watch.

Goals

Project goals:

Child safety and well-being: The primary goal of KidzVideo is to create a safe and secure

video platform for children. Ensure that the content they access is age-appropriate and

educationally valuable. This will help in safeguarding their physical and mental health.

User-friendly interface: Develop an intuitive and user-friendly interface that is easy for both

children and parents to navigate. This includes age-appropriate design for kids and robust

control features for parents.

Personal goals:

Collaboration: Work closely with the product manager and UI/UX designers to understand

their perspectives and contribute effectively to the project.

Product development skills: Gain a deeper understanding of the product development

process, including concept ideation, design, development, and testing.

User-centric mindset: Cultivate a user-centric mindset by empathizing with the needs and

concerns of parents and children who will use KidzVideo. This will help ensure that the app

meets their expectations and provides real value.

Research Analysis

In deeply empathizing with our target users, we use desk research and interview as the ways to understand and empathize with target users to find out their needs and frustrations.

Research objective: Minimizing the adverse impact of the lack of pervasive educational value content on video streaming platforms

Research questions:

∙ Find out the user's pain points in providing and controlling content for their children to watch

∙ Find out user's needs and expectations in providing and controlling content for their children to watch

∙ Find out what users are already doing in providing and controlling content for their children to watch

Findings Implementation

Through extensive user research and testing, we identified key user needs and pain points in KidzVideo. Parents highly value control over their children's online video experience, with a strong emphasis on limiting screen time, blocking channels, and setting preferences to ensure age-appropriate content.

Conclusion

One of the most significant takeaways from the KidzVideo project was the power of user-centered design. My team and I discovered that the success of our platform hinged on its ability to cater to the needs and preferences of both parents and children. This meant designing an interface that was intuitive and engaging for kids while also providing parents with the control and peace of mind they desired.
