Case Study Overview

An education company conducted some classes in a webinar format. Students could only purchase that classes through digital platforms, currently limited to e-commerce. To access the class materials, users need to redeem the class on their website. According to the analytics data, that company observed that although 97% of users redeemed their classes, only 60% completed all course materials.

Objectives

Create more engaging and fun experience in our LMS pages so users will be more

motivated to complete their class materials

Success Metrics

Increase completion rate of the class

Problem Statement

  • Users may be disengaging from the course materials despite redeeming their classes

  • Create a more engaging and enjoyable experience within the LMS pages, aiming to increase user motivation and subsequently boost the completion rate of that classes

Investigation

In order to address the identified challenge of low completion rates despite high redemption rates in that classes, we have initiated a two-pronged approach leveraging user interviews and comprehensive research through articles.

Interview User

I asked a few friends of mine about their experiences in completing the courses they took and another one who has experience studying at this education company. I found out a few comments that are corresponding to my concerns.

Motivation and Goals:

  • What are your primary goals or objectives for taking the courses?

  • How do you envision these classes helping you achieve your goals?

Engagement and Process:

  • What factors motivate you to continue engaging with the course materials?

  • How do you typically approach completing course materials? Do you follow a specific schedule or routine?

  • Have you experienced any difficulties or barriers that have prevented you from completing course materials in the past?

Summary:

  • Lack of motivation from the course. Despite being self-paced, there is a need for encouragement to complete the course on time.

  • Sometimes, the material in the current chapter is already understood or has been previously learned, which leads to reluctance in revisiting it.

Findings Implementation

Progress tracking:

  • Provide participants with a personalized dashboard or progress tracker where they can visualize their progress in completing course modules, assignments, quizzes, and other learning activities.

  • Implement a system of checkpoints or milestones within the course to break down the learning journey into manageable segments. Participants can receive notifications or rewards upon reaching each milestone, providing a sense of accomplishment and momentum.

Adaptive learning:

  • Implement an adaptive learning system where participants have the option to skip material they have already studied or understand.

  • Upon skipping, participants are presented with a test or quiz to assess their comprehension of the skipped material.

  • If the participant fails the test, they are prompted to review the material again. This ensures that participants only skip material they genuinely understand, while also reinforcing learning where needed.

  • The tests could be designed to be challenging yet fair, providing an accurate measure of understanding rather than mere rote memorization.

Conclusion

While doing this project I put more focused on identified users and their pain points. In conclusion, incorporating adaptive learning and progress tracking features presents effective solutions to boost completion rates in their classes. Adaptive learning allows participants to personalize their learning experience, focusing on areas where they need improvement. Progress tracking provides visibility and motivation, breaking down the learning journey into manageable milestones. By implementing these features, the class can enhance user engagement and satisfaction, leading to improved course completion rates and overall success.

If I had more time, I could have collected survey responses from more target users. Incorporate user feedback mechanisms directly within the app, such as in-app surveys or feedback forms. This will encourage users to provide feedback, making it easier to gather insights for continuous improvement.
